Short trips into the working world

Since 2009, the Seine-Saint-Denis County Council has been backing “la Culture et l’Art au Collège (CAC)”. This project is based to a large extent on the presence in class for several weeks (40h) of an artist or scientist whose mission is to engage the students in a process of research and creation.

Tutors: Mathieu Bensoussan/ PhD in sociology, Marc Loriol/ sociologist, DeedeSall/ PhD student in sociology

Project manager: Anna Mezey

Objectives:
The pupils were encouraged to think about what is often called “the working world”. What is work? Can one person have several occupations? What is it like to work in a firm? Under the guidance of a work sociologist, the pupils explored some of these questions.

Workshop:
The class discussed the “working world”. The pupils talked about occupations, the working world, dream jobs, professional relations. How do we define an occupation? Why do we work? Just for money? A sociological approach was used to guide their investigation.

The sociologist helped the class draw up an interview form before starting fieldwork. The pupils became interviewers engaged in research on an occupation or trade. They practised interview techniques in class.

Equipped with sociological tools (interview forms, dictaphones, notebooks, cameras) they went into the field to carry out the survey. Each class had its own field (town hall, general council, food service, cultural facilities).

Back in class, they processed the data they had collected. Guided by the sociologist they drew conclusions and made statements.

Outcome:
An 8-minute video in which pupils from each class, some of the sociologists involved in the project and the researcher Dominique Méda explained their views of work and the working world. The video was shown in the schools using the MICACO system.
